Student Loan Autopay: 1 Percent Off by Dec 31

The best student loan deal of the year takes about five minutes and expires on December 31. The Department of Education raised the autopay interest discount on federal Direct Loans from the usual 0.25 percentage points to a full 1 percentage point, and borrowers who are enrolled by December 31, 2026 keep that rate through June 30, 2028, according to USA TODAY's report of the department's announcement. Nearly 2 million borrowers have already signed up. If you have eligible loans and you are not on autopay, this is a checklist worth finishing this week, not in late December when servicer sites get busy.

The math first

One point off is worth roughly 1 percent of your balance in saved interest per year, a little less as you pay the balance down. On a 6 percent loan, you pay 5 percent while the discount holds. Here is the worked table, my own arithmetic on the department's terms:

Eligible balanceInterest saved per yearSaved over 18 months
$10,000about $100about $150
$25,000about $250about $375
$50,000about $500about $750
$100,000about $1,000about $1,500

No investment I recommend on this site pays a guaranteed return for ticking a box. This one effectively does, which is why it belongs ahead of most items on my year-end money moves list.

The checklist

Work through these in order:

  • Confirm your loans qualify. The discount covers Direct Loans originated after July 1, 2012, including parent loans, per the department's terms reported by Money Crashers. Older FFEL or Perkins loans do not count.
  • Find your servicer. Log in at StudentAid.gov; your dashboard names the servicer under My Aid. Autopay is switched on with the servicer, not on StudentAid.gov.
  • If you are still on SAVE, move first. SAVE is defunct, and former SAVE borrowers must choose another repayment plan before the discount applies. Do this step early; plan changes take longer than autopay enrollment.
  • If you are in default, cure that first. The route the department describes is consolidating the defaulted loans into a new loan and choosing a repayment plan, then enrolling.
  • Turn autopay on in the servicer portal. Choose auto pay, enter the bank account the payment should come from, and confirm. Borrowers already on autopay got the bigger discount automatically, so if that is you, just verify the rate in your portal.
  • Link an account that never runs low. Three payments bounced for insufficient funds can cancel your enrollment, and the discount only holds while you stay enrolled.
  • Verify the new rate. Check your portal a few days later and confirm the rate actually dropped by the full point. Screenshot it. Servicer errors are common enough that the screenshot is worth the ten seconds.
  • Calendar June 30, 2028. That is when the 1 percent rate ends. What replaces it has not been announced, so do not build a long payoff plan that assumes it lasts.

The traps

The discount pauses when payments pause. During deferment or forbearance the reduction stops and resumes when regular payments restart. If you are pursuing forgiveness and considering a pause, that trade belongs in the same calculation I use for paying yourself first: never trade a guaranteed saving for a vague one.

Autopay pulls the full payment, on the due date. If your budget is tight in a particular month, autopay does not negotiate. Keep a one-payment buffer in the linked account; it is cheaper than a bounced payment and a lost discount.

Private loans are not in this program. This is a federal Direct Loan benefit only. Refinancing federal loans into a private loan to chase a rate would also give up this discount and every federal protection, which is almost never the right trade for a temporary one-point gap.

Five minutes, one portal login, and a verified rate: that is the whole task. Do it before the December rush, and let the discount run for the full 18 months.
